All mobile phones 'to soon enable contactless payments'
3 Jul 2009

All mobile phones will include near field communications (NFC) technology within the next 12 months, it has been predicted.

Speaking in Stockholm earlier this week, Hakan Djuphammar of Ericsson said he thought it would be likely that every new handset sold a year from now will feature NFC.

He went on to suggest that NFC technology could even be integrated with sim cards to offer a secure identity that could be used to enable contactless payments and eMoney transactions.

"Basically, every new phone that's sold will have NFC. It's a two-way, bidirectional RFID communication link that makes this device work as a tag or as a reader," Mr Djuphammar said, according to Rethink Wireless.

Non-NFC mobile commerce revenues are likely to total $1.6 billion (£970 million) by the end of this year, according to ABI Research.

ABI Research practice director Dan Shey said that NFC-based methods offer the best user experience when it comes mobile commerce technology, however.
