Cashless payments 'part of charity drive'
23 Nov 2009
As the Salvation Army prepares to begin its Red Kettle campaign - an annual Christmas charity drive - organisers are allowing some donors to make cashless payments for the first time.
NBC17 in North Carolina noted that this year, some Red Kettle locations will be kitted out with cashless facilities, which means that people will be able to donate even if they are not carrying coins or notes.
"You can swipe your card to be able to give," said Salvation Army captain Greg Davis.
The cashless payment option will be available the day after the Thanksgiving holiday in the US (November 27th) at a total of four locations in the state of North Carolina.
Robert Kidd of Tripwire commented last month that the move towards a cashless society "continues to gain pace".
Writing for Secure Computing, he added that organisations need to ensure they comply with industry security protocols as this trend expands.
