Cashless society 'is widely accepted'
29 July 2009

An ever-increasing number of retailers are joining the cashless society made possible through contactless smart cards such as sQuidcard, it has been noted.

The Times reports that football grounds and transit systems are putting in place card readers, while contactless smart cards are increasingly used for cashless catering in workplaces and school canteens.

Daniel Gidney, chief executive of Coventry City Football Club's Ricoh Arena, tells the publication that the stadium's own move to cashless catering was driven by a desire to better serve the team's fans.

"Our prime objectives were to improve the customer experience and to generate more turnover by taking more off those customers who were already trying to spend money with us," he explains.

The Times adds that, in the three years before the London Olympics take place in 2012, it is hoped that the UK's cashless society can become widespread enough to allow contactless smart cards to be used as standard at the sporting event.

Laura Jansen, the Campaign to Protect Rural England's senior campaigns communicator, recently wrote to the Times expressing her desire to see contactless smart card payments used more widely on rural transit systems.
