Cashless catering comes to Nailsea school
10 Jul 2009
A new cashless catering scheme has been announced for a school in Nailsea, reports the Bristol Evening Post.
The cashless catering programme is part of a high-tech card-based system at the new school which is also intended to track attendance and detect pupils who are running late for their lessons.
However, it is the cards' ability to carry electronic money that could prove most versatile, as the publication claims they will be used for school meals and library services such as photocopying.
While they are not intended to record what the pupils eat, the cards can carry information such as any special dietary requirements - which could also warn against allergies or intolerances.
Schools in Wiltshire which have adopted the sQuid contactless smart card have already seen an increase in the number of school dinners sold.
The electronic money can be used by pupils, while the technology embedded in the contactless smart card can make their transaction history available online for their parents to check.
