Cashless school dinner payment 'can end stigma against poor students'
26 Jul 2011

Introducing a cashless school dinner payment can aid students who are being stigmatised for claiming free meals, according to a Welsh politician.

Ramesh Patel, a councillor from Canton in the Cardiff area, told the South Wales Echo that some children - including himself in his youth - would rather skip eating altogether to avoid being bullied.

However, some locations, such as Willows High in Tremorfa, have introduced a cashless fob system at mealtimes to ensure that the visibility of students receiving free meals is kept to a minimum.

Cardiff Council has also confirmed plans to launch a web-based biometric till system, though this will not take place until September 2012.

Councillor Patel said: "When there is one group of children with tickets and the rest have cash, kids can be very cruel - a cashless system would help stop that."

Earlier this month, the East London and West Essex Guardian Series reported that Roding Valley High School in Alderton Hill is looking to introduce a cashless catering solution that would possibly involve use of a card.
