Cautionary tale in the US could encourage take-up of school dinners
13 Dec 2011

Overworked parents who make their children's packed lunches before they go to bed may consider moving them to school dinners after a cautionary tale in the US.

Skyler Ray from Florida was sent to lessons as usual last week with his lunch in a bag.

However, his mother had absentmindedly put a sharp butter knife in with his sandwiches.

When Skyler tried to use it, not only did he cut his finger, but he also got into trouble for bringing a potentially offensive weapon in to school.

His father Chris said he is now a little worried about the consequences, particularly for Skyler later in life.

"The school was referring to it as a weapon and it can't look good going into college that you got expelled for bringing a weapon to school," he pointed out.

Many more parents may be considering switching to school dinners to save them the job of making sandwiches both in the US and on this side of the Atlantic.

Earlier this month, the Echo reported that Bardfield Primary School in Vange is to have its own vegetable patch and smallholdings, something that could increase take-up of midday meals.
