Celebrity chef's plans for school catering put on hold
17 Oct 2011
Celebrity chef Marco Pierre White's plans to revolutionise school catering have been put on hold by the government, a Freedom of Information request has revealed.
White hoped to develop his own plan similar to that of rival Jamie Oliver that would encourage ministers to improve school dinners and met with educationsecretary Michael Gove last year, the Guardian reports.
He wanted to bring in professional cooks to give master classes to children and allow parents more say over what goes on to school menus.
However, the newspaper reports that the government has put White's plans "on the backburner".
Despite this, a coalition spokesperson insisted the ministers behind school meals are "interested to hear ideas from people who are experienced and knowledgeable in their fields".
Oliver succeeded in banning foods such as Turkey Twizzlers from school dinners after exposing them in his programme Jamie's School Dinners as containing only one-third "mechanically recovered" turkey meat.
Last week, children across the UK enjoyed a slap-up meal as part of Food for Life's Roast Dinner Day.
