Contactless smart card industry assessed
5 Aug 2009
Millions of contactless smart cards will be issued to consumers over the coming months, it has been suggested.
Contactless News reports that it is now a case of getting people to use the technology and, consequently, move a step closer to a cashless society.
The news provider cites Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, as saying 80 million cards are expected to be issued through 2009. This is likely to be accompanied by 100,000 terminals.
"Deployment hasn't slowed down and plans are still underway to continue the roll-out of the infrastructure," he added.
It is the US that is leading the way with contactless smart cards, the industry expert continued.
The US may be the highest issuer of smart cards, but in the UK sQuidcard is helping to provide cashless catering in schools while at the same time making sure youngsters who are entitled to free school meals are not made to feel different.
