Cumbrian school rolls out cashless catering solutions
24 Jun 2011
Cockermouth School in Cumbria is introducing a new cashless catering scheme to speed up queues during lunchtimes.
Each youngster at the school will be given their own account, which can be topped up at stations throughout the school, reports the Times and Star.
The cashless catering system also features fingerprint recognition technology, allowing pupils to swipe their digit over a scanner to pay for their lunch.
Dawn Boyes, school business manager, told the news provider the new system will "make life so much easier for parents and students".
She explained there is even an 'overdraft' facility which will allow students to get lunch even if they do not have money to top up their cashless card.
Joyce Watson, Labour assembly member for mid and west Wales, recently told the BBC she believes implementing cashless catering systems in schools will help reduce the "stigma" associated with children receiving free school meals.
