Denver students equipped with contactless smart cards
15 Jun 2012

Students and staff at a leading university in Denver, Colorado, are being provided with new contactless smart cards in place of their traditional ID cards.

To begin with, the new cards will allow them to access secure buildings through a contactless door access system, but more applications will be added in the future.

All of the 45,000 students and staff members at the Auraria Higher Education Centre (AHEC), which includes the University of Colorado Denver, will be provided with a new ID card.

Once the system is up and running the institution intends to give the ID cards an eMoney function so that they can use them to make purchases in campus shops and as part of a cashless catering system in cafeterias.

The system is being provided by Multicard and will also be used to pay for parking on campus and as a library card.

"By electing to utilise standards-based smart cards, they are benefitting from the highest level of encryption technology while avoiding the costs and inflexibility associated with proprietary card platforms," explained Hugo Garcia, president of Multicard US.
