East Ayrshire young people try school catering
26 Aug 2011
Head teachers hoping to remove the stigma surrounding free school meals by introducing cashless catering could be interested in a scheme carried out in East Ayrshire.
According to the Cumnock Chronicle, a group of young residents have taken part in a scheme to improve their chances of getting a job in the catering industry.
As part of the Get into Cooking programme, the 11 participants spent five weeks at the Cook School Scotland, where they were educated about food preparation.
The initiative, aimed at individuals aged between 16 and 25, offered work experience placements and confidence-building to prepare the youngsters for employment.
Ken Imrie, Head of Programme Delivery at the Prince's Trust Scotland, said: "[By] pooling our knowledge and expertise, we are giving young people the best chance possible for a positive future."
This news comes after the Sutton Trust suggested that admissions staff should prioritise children who qualify for free school meals in a bid to provide moreeducation for poorer youngsters, Public Finance reported.
