Get ready for the 'cashless catering revolution'
22 Dec 2009
UK consumers should get ready for the "cashless catering revolution", it has been suggested.
The Guardian reports that with the proposed abolishment of paper cheques by 2018, one of the industries that will be affected by the increasingly cashless society is the school catering trade.
By 2018 the paper predicts that many parents will be paying for their children's school lunches online, rather than the traditional method of packing the kids off to school with dinner money.
Schools throughout the country are already trialling this method of payment, with eMoney being put onto contactless smart cards to pay for food services.
St Augustine's Catholic College in Wiltshire has teamed up with sQuidcard to implement a simple, speedy and secure cashless catering system, which helps to encourage a discreet method for administering free school meals.
It is hoped that this will eradicate the stigma that is currently attached to free lunches and cut down on bullying.
