Government 'should spend more on British school dinners'
14 Nov 2011
The government needs to spend more on school catering services to ensure that what children eat is British.
This is according to the Countryside Alliance Foundation, which found that only 35 per cent of schools know where the food they serve up comes from, while those that do admitted that only 62 per cent of it was sourced in Britain in 2009-10.
Some regions were doing better than others, with Rochdale Online reporting that Bolton and Rochdale had come top in spending on British produce for school meals.
The government has now been called upon to implement a minimum British food-buying policy for all education providers.
Countryside Alliance Foundation chief executive Alice Barnard said: "[We urge] the government to extend their buying standards guidance to schools, to ensure parents, pupils, producers and taxpayers are getting the best possible deal from their Local Education Authority."
Last month, Bolton Council also picked up the Local Authority Caterer of the Year trophy at the Educatering Magazine awards.
