Hampshire children embrace free school meals
26 Aug 2011
Head teachers hoping to introduce cashless catering in a bid to remove the need for children to feel embarrassed about payments could be interested in recent news in Hampshire.
According to the Daily Echo, the number of pupils taking advantage of free school meals has risen since last year, but more have been encouraged to do so.
Statistics from the Department for Education reveal that 8.3 per cent of primary school and 6.3 per cent of secondary school students ate free school meals, a total of 12,350.
However, the School Food Trust has claimed that only 83 per cent of pupils who are eligible to receive the offer are actually taking them up.
A spokesman for the charity said: "There are still too many families on low incomes who would qualify but who haven't registered to take free school meals."
This news comes after the Burton Mail reported that Springfield Junior School in Derbyshire would receive funding from its local authority to prepare its meals onsite.
