Head teachers 'could introduce discounts on school catering'
6 Sep 2011
Head teachers could introduce flexible payments on school catering to ensure all pupils are able to enjoy a nutritious meal in the middle of the school day.
According to the Independent, politicians are set to debate the issue in parliament later this week in a bid to encourage higher numbers of children into the canteen.
The move, which is part of the government's Education Bill, would also see a significant increase to the standard of food served in institutions across the country.
Michael Nelson, Director of Research and Nutrition for the School Fund Trust, noted that healthy meals could improve concentration levels for pupils in the afternoon.
"If you're on a tight budget or you've got more than one child at school, the costs add up whether you opt for a school lunch or a packed lunch," he added.
Earlier this month, the School Fund Trust highlighted the importance of providing healthy and nutritious meals in order to improve the overall wellbeing of children while they are at school.
