'Huge change' reported in school meals
18 Nov 2009

Schools across the UK have started introducing cashless catering systems in recent years, which involve children paying for canteen items with contactless smart cards or other eCash methods.

And as technology has developed, it would seem that so has the food at the pupils' disposal.

Beverley Baker, Chair of the Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA), said last week that there has been "a huge change" in the quality of food and drink on offer in UK schools.

She suggested that much of what is served up at educational institutions throughout Britain is locally sourced and made with fresh products.

Her comments came at the end of National School Meals Week, which was held nationwide to try and boost the number of youngsters who eat healthy cooked dinners during their lunch hour.

Many schools offered free meals as part of the special week, while various other activities took place to promote the occasion.
