Irish school embraces cashless catering
14 Oct 2011

school in Ireland is embracing cashless catering after asking sQuidcard to install a new electronic payment system.

St Patrick's Academy in Dungannon brought the technology in after finding that the need for children to bring in cash or cheques to pay for school dinners on a regular basis was inconvenient, the Tyrone Times reports.

Parents of children at the school can now go online to top up their contactless smart card, meaning youngsters will never be stuck without money to buy meals.

What is bought using the cards can also be checked online so that mums and dads know their children are eating healthily.

The school's facilities manager Mary Thompson told the newspaper: "Our main aim is to remove the need for cash in school, as well as creating another simple and innovative way for children to pay for their school meals."

This comes after the School Food Trust found that hot meals provided by school are typically much healthier than packed lunches.
