Lincolnshire families urged to sign up for school meals scheme
26 Oct 2011

Families in East Lincolnshire have been urged to sign up for a free school meal scheme by a local councillor.

Andrew De Freitas told the Grimsby Telegraph that many children in the region are missing out on hot food worth up to £10 a week because they have not been enrolled on the Free School Meals (FSM) programme.

He suggested that although 4,162 children in the region are taking advantage of the FSM initiative, up to 400 eligible families are paying for school lunches unnecessarily.

Mr De Freitas told the news provider that more people enrolling on the FSM project would lead to increased money for local schools through the government-funded Pupil Premium scheme.

"We must ensure that families who qualify for FSM are registered, so that even more money can come into the area that will benefit our pupils," he was reported as saying.

Yesterday (October 25th) celebrity chef Jamie Oliver told the Guardian the government must make school meal improvements a greater priority.
