London borough unveils new loyalty card scheme for children
24 Sep 2010

Children in Barking and Dagenham will be rewarded for having a healthy lifestyle as part of a new loyalty card programme.

The local NHS trust and council are offering those aged between five and 11-years-old the chance to earn loyalty points which can be redeemed against various activities.

The Splash Card will be used to access after-school activities, leisure centres and youth clubs, while users can also earn points for choosing healthy school meals.

Roger Mitchell, headteacher of Ripple Primary School where the card was officially launched, said: "This is an incredibly exciting time for pupils who will be the first to use the Splash Card.

"The reward points are an excellent way to encourage our pupils to adopt healthier and more active lifestyles."

Officials hopes the cashless catering aspect of the programme will eliminate the social stigma associated with free school meals as no pupil will be differentiated from their peers.

Furthermore, parents will be aware of their child's meal choice so they can monitor their dietary habits on a weekly basis.
