London primary school introduces breakfast club
24 Oct 2011

Education boards across the UK may start to reassess school catering policies, after one headteacher hailed the impact a breakfast club has had on students.

Theresa Landreth told the Guardian that the introduction of cooked meals in the morning at Mitchell Brook primary school has transformed its fortunes.

Before Ms Landreth took charge, the institution had been labelled as "failing" by Ofsted inspectors, but it has now achieved a "good" rating.

She believes that ensuring children have a full stomach at the start of the day has led to vast improvements in grades, as concentration levels have been heightened.

"It becomes pointless to teach because they aren't going to progress throughout the morning. Breakfast club has transformed our school," Ms Landreth told the news provider.

She also stated punctuality has improved, as kids are getting to school on time in order to eat their breakfast.

The government recently announced it would commit more funds to its Pupil Premium Scheme, which was set up to help schools fund free meals for less privileged children.
