More children eligible for free school catering in Wales
13 Sep 2011
Higher numbers of children in Wales are eligible to receive free school catering since the beginning of the country's financial crisis, it has been revealed.
New figures published in the Western Mail highlighted that the number of pupils who qualify to receive the meals has risen by one third in some areas of the country.
The surprising figures have spurred some charities to suggest that increasing numbers of families are struggling to contend with the added pressure in the current economy.
Overall, the data revealed that those children who are eligible to receive school meals has risen by 14.5 per cent nationwide since the 2007-2008 school year.
Imran Hussain, Head of Policy at Child Poverty Action Group, said: "A lot of families are looking to see what help they can get to meet these costs. I think that's why we're seeing more families claiming."
This news emerges after a number of Welsh Councillors called for the introduction of cashless catering to remove the stigmas associated with free school meals.
