More parents considering school catering
31 Aug 2011

Head teachers hoping to revolutionise mealtimes in their institutions with the introduction of cashless catering could see increasing demand by parents hunting for cheaper options.

According to recent figures from LV='s Cost of a Child study, 16 per cent of guardians are considering switching their children to school lunches if they are less expensive than packed meals.

The statistics also revealed that 22 per cent of parents would consider giving their offspring second-hand items, including clothes, in a bid to spend less money.

In addition, it was revealed that mothers and fathers in the UK are set to spend £736 million on back to school basics, including stationary, uniforms and school books.

Mark Jones, Head of LV=, said: "Parents are under a great deal of pressure to spend significant amounts on kitting out their kids with the latest bags and coats and brand new uniforms and stationery."

This news comes after councilors in Wales called for the introduction of cashless catering to remove the stigma surrounding the uptake of free school lunches.
