New cashless catering scheme launched in Swindon school
22 Nov 2010

A new cashless catering scheme has been launched in a Swindon school, it has been revealed.

Churchfields school has introduced a new biometric payment system which allows pupils to pay for their food and drink with their fingers, reports Swindon Advertiser.

Lyn Howcroft, the school's business manager, claimed the scheme can help reduce the stigma associated with free school meals.

He told the new provider: "The kitchen staff aren't handling money so it makes the process quicker and also it's a real benefit for children on free school meals because they can't be identified in any way.

"Previously if children were on free school meals the catering staff had to identify who they were and their names were ticked off a list but now they aren't identified at all."

The new system is part of a £32,000 upgrade to the school's canteen, with the institution receiving a £15,000 grant from Swindon Council to help fund the development.
