New-look dining facilities 'boost school dinner take-up'
14 Oct 2009
Cafe-style seating and new lighting at Dunstable's Brewers Hill Middle School's dinner hall has helped boost the number of people who eat hot meals at the education institution.
Dunstable Today reports that the number of people eating canteen dinners at the school has trebled this term.
Gary Hobbs is the new chef at Brewers Hill and he has provided the kids with a new healthy menu.
School dinners have been a hot topic in recent months, with news of schools and colleges introducing cashless catering facilities and reports that there are significant numbers of pupils who qualify for free meals that are not receiving them.
Furthermore, a cashless catering system used in some Wiltshire schools, which is operated with technology from eCash network sQuidcard, has received positive feedback from parents.
Kids top up contactless smart cards with cash and then use them at the point of transaction in the school canteen. One benefit of this payment method is that it gives those who are entitled to free meals a discreet way of receiving their food.
