Parents 'concerned school meals will make children fat'
5 Jan 2012
Some parents may be stopping their children from having school meals because they are concerned they will make the youngsters obese.
According to the Malling Chronicle, a number of parents questioned outside the gates of schools in Kent were worried about what foods their offspring are being given at midday.
One mother, 30-year-old Becca Manning, said she keeps an eye on her children's diet and would give them packed lunches if she thought they were eating unhealthily.
Meanwhile, a grandmother revealed the mum of her grandchild already gives her daughter a pack-up because she believes they are healthier.
However, this could be a fallacy, as research by the School Food Trust last year found that 42 per cent of children with packed lunches are not given anything that would contribute to their five portions of fruit and vegetables a day.
In addition, parents at schools that operate cashless catering will be able to monitor what their little ones eat.
