Parents 'should push for high standards of food catering'
2 Sep 2011
Head teachers hoping to revolutionise the lunchtime system through the introduction of cashless catering could be interested in recent recommendations by a consumer watchdog.
According to reports, Consumer Focus Wales has urged parents to take action against poor food hygiene in a number of the country's schools, and called for changes to be made.
The organisation's advice emerges after new figures revealed that 48 education premises acquired low hygiene scores as part of a Food Standards Agency scheme.
Although local authorities have reassured campaigners that the issue is being dealt with, parents have been urged to push for improved standards and cleanliness in the nation's schools.
Liz Withers, Policy Head for Consumer Focus Wales, said: "[Parents] can do this by demanding information about what action will be taken to improve the rating and to see inspection reports."
This news comes after councillors in Wales called for the adoption of cashless catering systems in education establishments in a bid to remove the perceived stigma surrounding free school meals.
