Pirate character could increase uptake of school meals
20 Oct 2011
School catering officials in Swansea are hoping that the return of a popular cartoon character will have another positive effect on pupils when it comes to having a hot meal at midday.
Captain Jack, a pirate, was launched in October 2010 as part of a campaign to encourage healthy eating in the city, News Wales reports.
His popularity was such that 150 extra pupils began to eat school dinners instead of packed lunches.
This week, Captain Jack is back and will be visiting a number of schools to give out bananas, play games and dish out prizes to lucky children.
Catering facilities manager Bet Jenkins said: "Jack proved a big hit in the last school year and I am sure children will be delighted to see him back."
Earlier this month, the government revealed it will be adding extra funding to its Pupil Premium scheme in order to better provide for youngsters who are eligible for free school meals.
