Portsmouth school sees benefits of cashless catering
28 Jul 2010

More pupils are purchasing school meals at a primary school in Portsmouth following the introduction of a cashless catering scheme.

Around 55 per cent of the 1,000 students at Admiral Lord Nelson school now buy school meals – an increase of 11 per cent, reports portsmouth.co.uk.

The smart card programme allows users to quickly and securely pay for school meals without having to worry about carrying around loose change.

A number of improvements have been made to the dining area to encourage students to eat inside - the acoustics have been improved and a plasma TV has been installed.

The canteen also stocks a range of portable healthy lunches such as tortilla wraps, jacket potatoes and pasta salads for children who want to take their meals elsewhere.

Gaye Bartlett, the school's catering manager, claimed the new initiatives have been a big success

She told the website: "We survey the kids on what they like and what they want to see on offer. We work directly for the school and not for a catering company which helps."

The school recently won the School Food Trust's School of the Month award and was awarded a £5,000 cheque.
