School catering chiefs could benefit from military payments
21 Oct 2011
School catering staff who work in a west Oxfordshire town could be boosted by extra funding from the government.
Witney has been highlighted as one of the places that could benefit most from the coalition's plans to increase the amount of money that schools with high numbers of children from military backgrounds receive, the Witney Gazette reports.
The Service Child Pupil Premium has been introduced to help out mothers and fathers who are often posted abroad with the armed forces.
At the moment, schools receive £200 for every child who has a parent serving overseas and a further £488 for each youngster who has free school meals.
However, budget adjustments could see these figures grow sharply, as the government revealed it would double the fund to £2.5 billion in 2014/15.
Earlier this week, the Guardian reported that celebrity chef Marco Pierre White was looking to improve school meals in the UK by teaching youngsters how to cook and what to eat, but his plans have been stalled by the government.
