School catering: Children help with wartime soup kitchen
12 Oct 2011
Children who are used to making the most of cashless catering at school are getting the chance to go behind the scenes for a change, thanks to a special event this weekend.
Pupils at St Joseph's RC School in Pickering have been busy preparing vegetables and collecting ingredients for their village's annual wartime soup kitchen, the Gazette Herald reports.
Parents will be serving up the children's recipes while the youngsters themselves entertain attendees with music and singing on Saturday (October 15th 2011).
While it may be a chance for socialising, everyone could learn plenty about what life would have been like during the war, as this year's theme is 1943.
Ina Stewart from Friends of the School, which helped to organise the event, said: "The soup kitchen is always well supported and good fun."
Songs the children may be performing include Run, Rabbit, Run, We'll Meet Again and When the Lights Go On Again, all of which were popular in the Second World War.
