School catering in Bolton schools 'still cheapest in the country'
1 Sep 2011

Head teachers hoping to encourage higher numbers of pupils to take up school dinners could be interested in recent news from Bolton Council.

According to This Is Lancashire, the price of school meals in the town is still among the cheapest in the country, despite the recent reports the cost was set to rise.

A spokesperson for the local authority revealed that this lower price comes as a result of its decision to offer the meals for just £1 as part of a previous promotion.

For this reason, although prices are set to increase by 25 per cent, the £1.25 cost is still considered significantly lower than the national average.

"The discount has increased access to healthy school meals for more than 2,700 pupils each day for the last 18 months," the spokesperson added.

This news emerges after a survey carried out by consumer watchdog Which? suggested the government's quest to provide nutritious meals for school pupils could be under threat with the rise in price of school catering.
