School catering prices 'responsible for decline in uptake'
16 Sep 2011
Increasing prices of school catering in Falkirk have resulted in a significant drop in the number of pupils choosing to purchase them, it has been suggested.
According to the Falkirk Herald, MPs from the Scottish National Party have warned the city's Labour council that taking action could worsen obesity levels across the country.
The news emerges after recent figures revealed that uptake of school dinners in Falkirk primary schools has fallen by six per cent, while prices have risen 70 per cent in four years.
Education Spokesman Councillor Tom Coleman acknowledged the worrying figures and suggested that more should be done to encourage healthy eating among young people.
"The SNP administration kept the price of the healthy option school lunch at the lowest level in Scotland, and had the highest uptake as a result, for very good reasons," he added.
A recent article in the Daily Mail revealed that Scottish social services officials took four obese children from their parents after a failed attempt to take action against their weight issues.
