School catering promotions 'will encourage families to try them'
7 Sep 2011

More families could be encouraged to choose school catering for their children if proposals to offer promotions are given the green light, an expert has argued.

Claire Rick, spokeswoman at the School Fund Trust, suggested that reduced prices on nutritious meals could spur large families to select the option in the struggling economy.

Her comments emerge after the organisation revealed that 58 per cent of parents whose children ate packed lunches would be prepared to switch for a discounted price.

The proposed move comes amid current laws stating that institutions are not permitted to offer discounts on the same standard of catering to different groups of children.

Ms Rick also stated that take-up could rise significantly, and remain at a higher level after promotions, if lower prices are offered in a bid to encourage parents to try the scheme.

"If we want to increase take-up … so that more children can get the benefits of a good lunch, schools need support to use the new powers proposed in theEducation Bill," she added.
