School catering: Pupil Premium to be given to more schools
18 Oct 2011

The government has announced that it is to allocate more funding to its Pupil Premium scheme, an initiative designed to benefit those who are eligible for free school meals.

In Hartlepool, schools will get an additional £1.7 million for the 3,560 pupils who do not have to pay for meals at school, the Peterlee Mail reports.

This amounts to an extra £58 per child and Hartlepool Borough Council said it is delighted with the news, which will help schools to assist youngsters in making the best possible progress.

Children's minister Sarah Teather said: "The Pupil Premium will benefit poorer pupils, providing extra money directly for those pupils who need it the most."

The installation of cashless catering could be worthwhile for schools with youngsters eligible for free school meals, as eliminating money across the whole institution may reduce any stigma the children might feel at not paying for their lunch.
