School catering: Pupils enjoy Roast Dinner Day
13 Oct 2011

Children who use school catering services in Barrow enjoyed a slap-up roast dinner this week as part of a national celebration of food.

Thousands of education providers took part in Food for Life's Roast Dinner Day, one of which was Yarlside Nursery and Primary School in Barrow, the North-West Evening Mail reports.

The children tucked into succulent meat and vegetables, some of which were grown in the school's own garden and tended to by the youngsters.

Cook Joanne Walsh said she was impressed by the quality of the produce.

"It is wonderful how the children are taking an active involvement about where their food comes from and how it is cooked," she added.

The school catering service is now working towards a bronze Food for Life award for its efforts.

Last month, nutritionist and author Suzi Grant recommended growing fruit and veg as a healthy and cost-effective alternative to buying it.
