School dinner 'revolution' in Burnley
7 Oct 2009

school in Lancashire is educating its pupils about the benefits of healthy eating and has started offering a new fresh meal menu at lunchtime.

Burnley's Shuttleworth College worked with Lancashire County Council to create the new food options, which are served in various cafes and rooms within the school.

Fresh food ready for preparation is delivered to the institution throughout the week, reports the Burnley Express.

Headmaster Martin Burgess has implemented similar set-ups in previous schools and is confident about its future success at Shuttleworth College.

"Whatever school I've been in it has really worked - and changing their diets changes their attitude and also their behaviour," he explained.

Another school dinner system that has been deemed to encourage healthy eating is provided by a cashless catering facility courtesy of eMoney network sQuidcard.

By using contactless smart cards that keep an online record of past purchases to pay for items in school dinner halls, parents can track their children's eating habits via the internet.

Schools in Wiltshire have trialled the cashless system and there has been positive feedback from parents and teachers.
