School dinner time brought up to date
25 Sep 2009

Dinner ladies at two Merseyside schools have started new equipment in the canteen to help make lunchtimes more convenient for pupils.

The Liverpool Echo reports that Halewood Centre for Learning and Christ the King secondary schools have introduced pop star-style headsets so that dinner staff can keep in touch with each other during busy periods.

Alternative dining points exist at the schools, so the communication tools allow those who serve up the food to keep up to date on stock levels, as well as speed up queues.

Other dinnertime innovations implemented in UK schools recently include cashless catering facilities.

With the help of eMoney network sQuidcard, two Wiltshire secondary schools have provided children with contactless smart cards that can be used instead of cash to purchase food and drink.

The way dinner is served to pupils today is often a lot different to years ago.

Commenting on the initiative in Merseyside, Andy Austin - who helps oversee Knowsley Borough Council's school catering service - told the newspaper: "It makes dinner times more modern and professional."
