School dinners have improved, say 20% of parents
30 Oct 2009
Some 20 per cent of 2,000 parents questioned in a recent survey said they think school dinners have improved in recent times, according to Mintel.
The Daily Express reports that this percentage of mums and dads also think lunches in school canteens have got healthier since celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's television programmes highlighting poor standards in the sector were first broadcast.
A spokesperson for the research firm said that one in four parents have welcomed new school regulations relating to food served at UK schools.
"This is hardly a resounding endorsement of the legislation and Jamie Oliver's campaigns, which have cost the industry so dearly," the Mintel representative added.
In some parts of the UK, technology is being utilised to make buying school dinners more convenient. This, over time, may boost the number of people who purchase and eat hot dinners during the day.
With the help of eMoney network sQuidcard, St Augustine's Catholic College in Trowbridge and Sheldon School in Chippenham have introduced cashless catering facilities that enable pupils to pay for food with contactless smart cards.
