School lunches 'could improve concentration levels of pupils'
9 Sep 2011
Concentration levels and behaviour are likely to improve if pupils consume healthy school catering choices at lunch time, according to an expert.
Claire Rick, Spokeswoman for the School Food Trust, suggested that eating a nutritious meal in the middle of the day will increase productivity among children in the afternoon.
Her comments emerge after a recent study by the organisation revealed that 58 per cent of parents would encourage their child to eat school meals if prices were reduced.
In addition, the study highlighted that the cost of school catering could fall as part of the Education Bill, which could lead to a surge in pupils opting for the healthy option.
Ms Rick stated that secondary school pupils are approximately 18 per cent more focused following a school meal, with primary students three times more likely to concentrate.
"For many pupils having free school meals, their school lunch may be the only proper meal they eat in a day," she added.
