School meals 'could face government cuts'
18 Aug 2011
Head teachers looking to revolutionise their school catering facilities with the introduction of contactless smart cards could be affected by recent reports.
According to BBC News, public sector trade union Unison has predicted that education cuts imposed by the government could have a negative impact on school meals.
The predictions come amid talks that members, along with those from the Northern Ireland Public Service Alliance (Nipsa), will vote on whether or not to take strike action.
Nipsa's decision comes after Education Minister John O'Dowd was unable to provide reassurance to employees about the safety of their jobs.
The union predicted that more than 1,000 jobs in education would be lost as a result of government cuts to budgets, which is why it has suggested strike action.
Earlier this month, more than 450 Unison and Unite members took part in a strike in Southampton after being released from their jobs and rehired on lower wages.
