Schools embracing cashless catering systems to steer child eating habits
30 Jun 2010
More schools are adopting electronic payment systems in their canteens that allow them to encourage pupils to adopt a healthier diet where necessary.
That is according to a new report by Ofsted, which also noted that schools are monitoring kids' packed lunches and have a list of banned items they are using to prevent parents from giving youngsters unhealthy snacks.
The report was made by the inspectorate to ascertain how food standards can and are being improved in Britain's schools.
However, it also revealed that many parents thought schools were becoming too "bossy" and "interfering" in terms of packed lunches.
Most educational institutions are working to increase the uptake of school meals and free dinners - those that run cashless catering systems also provide parents with a chance to monitor their children's eating habits online.
As well as allowing parents and schools to monitor children's diets, cashless catering using contactless smart cards also reduces the need for kids to carry money at school and can speed up transactions, minimising queuing at lunchtimes.
