Security firm to take on school catering responsibilities
18 Oct 2011

A firm more commonly known for its security services is to take on the challenge of school catering after a business acquisition was announced.

G4S will start dishing up school dinners and cleaning hotel rooms after taking over Denmark's ISS in a deal worth £5.2 billion.

It said the tie-up will result in savings of £100 million a year by 2014.

Chief executive Nick Buckles commented: "Deals like this only come along every five to seven years - this is transformational and market changing. We think we have got the track record to make it work."

G4S is also to provide guards for the forthcoming London Olympic Games.

To improve the services of the school catering deals it takes on, the company could consider bringing in contactless smart cards for pupils to use to pay for their meals.

Earlier this month, the Daily Telegraph reported that thousands of children are being taught in super-sized primary schools, something that could increase take-up of cashless catering.
