SFT urges caterers to 'stay affordable'
31 Aug 2011

Parents worried about the possible increases to the price of school lunches in the current economic climate could be interested in comments from the School Fund Trust.

The national charity has urged catering companies to ensure meals remain at an affordable price amid fears they could increase by a significant amount.

Its comments emerge after a recent survey carried out by consumer watchdog Which? revealed that the cost of school dinners could rise by up to 25 per cent in certain areas.

David Edwards, the charity's Director of Programmes and Partnerships, argued that affordable prices are crucial to encouraging more families to opt for the meals.

"We're urging schools to continue investing in good food; helping them to make the lunch experience better so that pupils want to choose school meals, and supporting caterers to operate more efficiently," he explained.

Earlier this month, the Yorkshire Post reported that children in Leeds were being urged to take advantage of free catering if they were eligible, to ensure they are consuming a nutritious diet.
