Starbucks to introduce contactless payment terminals
26 May 2011

Brits who like to call into Starbucks for a relaxing hot-drink break will soon be able to pay for their purchases via contactless payment strategies.

That is because the well-known coffee house chain has agreed to a deal with Barclaycard and Visa Europe to adopt the scheme into its UK stores.

Such technology will be available for coffee-lovers by Spring 2012, allowing customers to simply swipe their Visa contactless cards over a payment terminal in the store.

Pete Blower, Starbucks EMEA Technology services manager, commented: "We're seeing more and more people use cards for payment and contactless will allow us to serve our customers more quickly and with greater ease."

The sales director of Global Payment Acceptance at Barclaycard, Marc Pettican, added that "coffee shops are the perfect environment for contactless payments", due to the urgency of many people in these establishments.

Another place where Brits will encounter contactless payment technology from early next year will be the M6 Toll Road, who is looking to introduce this method by as early as February 2012.
