Supermarket chain to cash in on contactless payment trend
23 Apr 2012

A major British supermarket is to take advantage of contactless payment when it rolls out the service across 25 stores from July.

Asda consumers will be able to make purchases up to the value of £20 through the introduction of contactless smart cards as the brand capitalises on the benefits of the technology.

It is hoped that the service will help reduce queuing times, particularly at peak hours, as well as helping to bolster business for the chain.

Head of contactless at Visa Europe Mark Austin said: “The rollout of contactless technology by organisations like Asda is helping to set the scene for a major change in the way we pay.”

In the UK alone, there is a circulation of around 20 million contactless cards, with forecasters believing this will rise to 30 million by the end of the year.

Asda boasts a customer base of around 18 million shoppers per week, some of whom will be able to use the tap and go technology to speed up their buying experience.

The Co-operative recently launched a trial of contactless payment solutions in anticipation of increased usage during the 2012 Olympic Games, taking place in London.
