US Army vets to see smart card pilot extension
24 Apr 2012

A recently piloted smart card system for US army veterans and spouses of force members is set to be extended after it proved popular.

The smart card programme was launched last October to enable retired army officials and the spouses of current soldiers improved access to a range of military and department of defense websites.

Smart card identity authentication was provided as an alternative to login and passwords for access to hubs such as Army OneSource and Army Family Readiness Group.

The Army Spouse and Retiree Smartcard Pilot forms part of a wider project to access sensitive information on Army private web servers, G-6 officials claimed.

Since the initiative was launched up to March 2012, more than 700 smart cards have been handed out to spouses and retirees over five pilot areas.

Some 93 per cent of people surveyed said they preferred the system to username and password securities, with 64 per cent of people using the service at least once a day.
