Wales may bring in different prices for cashless catering
12 Oct 2011
Schoolchildren using cashless catering in Welsh schools could soon be charged different prices depending on their family's income as part of new government plans.
Ministers insist this, as well as cutting the cost of school meals for parents with more than one child, will encourage take-up of hot dinners and help low-income families weather the worst of the economic downturn, BBC News reports.
Currently, cashless catering does not have a cap on what pupils can be charged and all the prices must be the same for each child.
However, the Welsh government said it has found that local authorities would welcome a change to this.
Earlier this month, a study carried out by the School Food Trust found that 40 per cent of children's lunchboxes do not contain any fruit or vegetables, meaning that school dinners could be a healthier option.
Indeed, 90 per cent of hot school meals contain at least one of a child's five-a-day.
