Clinton Cards embraces contactless smart card technology
23 Nov 2010
British retailer Clinton Cards has announced it will start rolling out contactless smart card technology across its UK stores this month.
In conjunction with Royal Bank of Scotland WorldPay, the company will offer its customers the chance to pay for goods without having to enter a PIN code in 50 stores across London and Liverpool.
Robert Brown, Electronic Point-Of-Sale system manager for Clinton Cards, expressed his belief that the new scheme would benefit customers.
He said: "As the contactless system provides a faster transaction time for any payment up to £15, it will allow us to tend to a greater number of customers, which will be invaluable during peak shopping times.
"It will also help customers who feel uncomfortable paying by chip and pin for small amounts when there are people waiting behind them at the checkout."
The firm claims that around a third of all in-store transactions are made using chip and pin technology, with around 150 card transactions made in each store during the average lunchtime.
