Contactless payment market 'maturing well' in UK
2 Aug 2011
The concept of contactless smart cards is now well established among UK consumers, according to an industry expert.
Vice president at Visa Europe Lewis Nolan told the Irish Times that Britain is one place where contactless technology has caught on, with approximately 15 cards now in use in the country.
"It's really starting to mature well in the UK," he commented.
According to the publication, an estimated 60,000 British shops now have contactless readers installed.
The newspaper went on to suggest that contactless debit cards will be commonly used among Irish consumers by summer 2012, as companies continue to develop technology designed to make living without cash a reality.
Both the Bank of Ireland and Ulster Bank have announced plans to roll out contactless cards, with the latter institution using staff to test the technology in the canteen of its Dublin branch last year.
A recent report from ABI Research predicted that one billion contactless payment cards will be shipped globally in 2016.
