Contactless payments arrive at Mobile World Congress
16 Feb 2010
Those who are attending the 2010 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, will benefit from a new roll-out of contactless payment technology, according to organisers.
A total of 400 handsets are set to be distributed to conference delegates, who will be able to use the Samsung Star phones to make food and drink purchases to a limit of €75 (£65.12) as part of the payment trial.
The contactless payments will be accepted at more than 30 merchant locations at the event - buyers will simply have to hold their handset against the contactless terminal for purchases totalling less than €10, while any sales greater than this amount can be completed when the user provides a pass code.
All the transactions are processed online.
Cashless payments are on the rise across Europe, according to new figures from Retail Banking Research.
The firm noted that eMoney solutions have proven to be particularly popular in western Europe as cheques become less widely accepted as a method of payment.
